How Sad? When it comes to retirement, many middle class Americans said 80 is the new 65

80 is the new 65 when it comes to retirement, survey says

CHICAGO (Reuters) – When it comes to retirement, many middle class Americans said 80 is the new 65 and plan to delay retirement because of worries over money, according to a new survey.

Wells Fargo bank asked 1,500 Americans who earned between $25,000 and $99,999 and ranged in age from 20 into their 70s questions about retirement, savings and Social Security for its seventh annual retirement survey.

Three-fourths of those surveyed said they expect to work in their retirement years. One quarter said they will “need to work until at least age 80″ to live comfortably in retirement.

Of Americans who will work in retirement, “47 percent said that they are going to continue in the same job or a similar job of similar responsibility,” Joe Ready, Well Fargo’s director of Institutional Retirement and Trust, told Reuters Insider.

“That raises a lot of social and economic implications. Will they have the physical ability to work, the mental capacity? What does that mean for the younger work force in terms of coming through and looking to get ahead?”

Three-fourths of Americans said it is more important to have a specific amount saved before retirement, regardless of age, while only 20 percent said it is more important to retire at a specific age regardless of savings.

In terms of saving for retirement, 53 percent of those surveyed said they need to significantly cut back on spending now to save for retirement.

“People are overwhelmed. They’re not saving enough,” Ready said.

On average, Americans have saved only seven percent of their desired retirement nest egg, with a median of $25,000 saved versus a median retirement goal of $350,000.

“For several years now, we’ve seen that Americans are undersaving for retirement and a majority do not trust the stock market as a place to invest for retirement,” Ready said.

“We did find a bright spot among middle class Americans – more than three quarters do not want to retire with mortgage debt. This is an important goal, particularly for younger Americans,” said Laurie Nordquist, director of Wells Fargo Institutional Retirement and Trust.

Eighty-six percent of respondents said it’s important to own their home debt free by retirement.

On the issue of Social Security there was an age divide. Those in their 60s expect Social Security to provide 46 percent of their retirement funding. But more than a quarter of Americans in their 20s and 30s expect no income at all from Social Security during their retirement.

Green tea shows small effect on cholesterol

Green tea shows small effect on cholesterol

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Green tea, in a cup or a capsule, may shave off a few points of your “bad” cholesterol, a new research review suggests.

Looking at 20 past clinical trials, researchers found that green tea trimmed 5 to 6 points more from people’s total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol levels than dummy capsules or other inactive treatments.

The trials tested either green tea itself or capsules containing green-tea compounds called catechins, which are thought to decrease cholesterol absorption in the gut.

In general, green tea in a cup was more consistently effective than capsules. But the benefits overall were fairly small.

“The analysis suggests there is only a modest effect of green tea on cholesterol levels,” said senior researcher Olivia J. Phung, an assistant professor of pharmacy at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.

LDL cholesterol is considered optimal when it is below 100 milligrams per deciliter, whereas 160 mg/dL or more is considered high.

The researchers found no strong evidence that green tea boosted “good” HDL cholesterol, or cut triglycerides, another type of blood fat. So for people who have high cholesterol, green tea is no replacement for medication, Phung told Reuters Health in an email.

“If someone is already taking medication for their cholesterol,” she said, “they should stick with it and not try to trade it for green tea — either capsules or the beverage.”

On the other hand, Phung noted, adding green tea to your diet could be one way to further improve your cholesterol numbers.

But green tea is not a dietary magic bullet. To keep your cholesterol in check, experts recommend getting plenty of high-fiber grains, fruits and vegetables, and limiting saturated fat (from meat and full-fat dairy) in favor of “good” fats from fish and vegetable oils.

A good number of clinical trials have examined whether green tea, or green tea extracts, can benefit people’s cholesterol levels. But they have come to mixed conclusions. One problem is that most of those trials have been small, which makes the findings less reliable.

So for their study, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Phung’s team pooled the results of 20 clinical trials that involved a total of 1,415 adults.

In all of the trials, participants were randomly assigned to either use green tea everyday (as a beverage or capsule) or be part of “control” groups that took placebo capsules, drank a low-catechin tea or downed water in lieu of tea.

The trials lasted anywhere from three weeks to six months, with the green-tea users showing a bigger average decline in LDL and total cholesterol than their counterparts in the control groups.

The benefit seemed to be limited to people who already had high cholesterol when they entered the study.

Overall, teas appeared more effective than capsules. But Phung said there isn’t enough data to be sure that the beverage is better than the extract.

“We would really need to have some head-to-head studies comparing the different forms of green tea in order to show which ones work more effectively,” Phung said.

There are other questions, too — including what dose of green tea catechins is “ideal.”

In the trials Phung’s team studied, the daily catechin dose ranged from 145 milligrams to 3,000 milligrams. But the researchers were not able to test for a “dose-response” effect — which would have shown whether the cholesterol benefits increase as the catechin dose goes up.

As for side effects, green tea is considered safe in moderate amounts — though the drink and the extracts contain caffeine, which some people may need to avoid.

There have also been a few dozen cases of liver damage reported among people using green tea extracts, but it’s not certain that the supplements are to blame.

The current study had no industry funding, and none of the researchers reports financial conflicts of interest.

News Flash: Delta Air Lines Alerts Consumers To Fraudulent Emails

Delta Air alerts consumers to fraudulent emails

(Reuters) – Delta Air Lines Inc is investigating scam emails suggesting to consumers that their credit cards have been charged for a ticket from the company, it said on Wednesday.

The company posted an advisory on its website this week saying it had not sent the emails. It said consumers should delete the emails and not click on any links in them or open any attachments, as they could contain viruses.

“Be assured that Delta did not send these emails, and our customers’ credit cards have not been charged by Delta as a result of the emails,” the advisory states.

Emails received by some consumers claimed to be electronic ticket receipts for a roundtrip flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport to San Francisco, with the first leg departing on November 26. The emails give a confirmation number and ticket number.

“Because the emails are not coming from Delta we can’t speculate on the volume, but our information security team is engaged and has confirmed that no customer data has been compromised,” Delta spokesman Paul Skrbec said in a statement on Wednesday.

Delta also recommended that anyone who received the scam emails change the personal identification number for their SkyMiles frequent-flyer program and monitor their account for misuse.

Obama’s Healthcare Reforms Not Liked – More Americans than not want health law repealed: poll

More Americans than not want health law repealed: poll

Nov 16, 2011 09:28 EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to review Obama’s healthcare reforms, more Americans want it repealed than want to keep it, a poll released on Wednesday shows.

A Gallup survey of more than 1,000 U.S. adults found that 47 percent favor the repeal of healthcare reform, versus 42 percent who want the law kept in place. Eleven percent had no opinion.

But the survey also showed that 50 percent of Americans believe the federal government has a responsibility to make sure everyone has health coverage, compared with 46 percent who do not.

The results, which have a 4 percentage point margin of error, suggest a sharply divided U.S. public as the Supreme Court prepares to begin hearing legal arguments next March from 26 states and an independent business group that want the law struck down as unconstitutional.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would extend health coverage to more than 30 million uninsured Americans by expanding Medicaid and establishing special state-run insurance markets called exchanges.

The law is Obama’s signature domestic policy achievement, and a high court decision to overturn the reforms could deal a severe blow to his re-election prospects in the middle of the 2012 presidential campaign. A ruling to retain it could help his campaign.

The Supreme Court would be expected to rule by July.

Obama, a Democrat, is opposed by a field of Republican candidates who want the healthcare reform law repealed as a symbol of an intrusive government seeking to raise taxes and burden businesses with new regulation.

Public opposition to the law, particularly among the elderly, helped Republicans wrest control of the House of Representatives from Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections.

But advocates of the reforms say the law will reduce the soaring growth of healthcare costs over time and provide medical care to millions of families who currently have no protection.

The November 3-6 Gallup poll also showed a small reduction in public support for private insurance as the basis for gaining medical services in the $2.6 trillion U.S. healthcare system.

The findings said 56 percent of adults continue to prefer private insurance versus 39 percent who would favor a government-run system. That compares with a 61 percent to 34 percent margin a year ago.
