A string of violent storms demolished small towns in Indiana and cut off rural communities in Kentucky as an early season tornado outbreak killed more than 30 people, and the death toll rose as daylight broke on Saturday’s search for survivors. (March 3)
“We are no match for Mother Nature at her worst.”
So says Mitch Daniels, the Governor of Indiana, after it and three other US states were hit by powerful tornadoes with the loss of more than 30 lives.
School buildings, a prison and even small towns
were destroyed by the fast-moving twisters which also proved deadly in Kentucky, Ohio and Alabama.
A number of people are missing and it is feared the death toll could rise.
Weather forecasters predict there could be more storms to come and fears are growing that this could be another bad year for tornadoes in the US.
Some 550 deaths in the country were blamed on twisters in 2011, the deadliest year in nearly a
century.

Here is a look at some of the notable events that took place on this day in history, March 3rd.
