Kennedy Mistress, Was Shot Execution-style In Broad Daylight – New Book Exposes Murder Linked to JFK Assassination

WASHINGTON — Conspiracy theorists who question President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963 have, over the years, become obsessed with another murder. On Oct. 12, 1964, socialite and artist Mary Pinchot Meyer, a longtime Kennedy mistress, was shot execution-style in broad daylight while walking along the Georgetown canal towpath.

Within hours, police charged day laborer Ray Crump Jr. with murder. They never found the gun, however, and a jury acquitted Crump after an eyewitness described the killer as much bigger than the diminutive defendant. In the ensuing years, the case has become one of Washington’s most infamous unresolved murder cases.

In his new book, “Mary’s Mosaic: The CIA Conspiracy to Murder John F. Kennedy, Mary Pinchot Meyer, and Their Vision of World Peace,” author Peter Janney lays out a complex web of high society and high crimes that implicates some of the nation’s most respected intelligence agents, journalists and government officials in what Janney contends was a massive cover-up spanning three decades. At the center is a shadowy, all-too-familiar villain, the Central Intelligence Agency of the early-1960s.

Meyer was born into a wealthy Pennsylvania family in 1920, and first met Kennedy at a prep school dance in 1938. She attended Vassar College and married CIA agent Cord Meyer in 1944. By the mid-1950s, the couple was firmly established as part of Georgetown’s glittering young social set, whose members included then-Sen. Kennedy and his wife, Jackie; Washington Post publisher Phil Graham and his wife, Katherine; and journalist Joseph Alsop. The Meyers divorced in 1958, when Mary was 38.

After Kennedy’s election as president, Meyer became a frequent visitor to the White House, and her sexual relationship with the president was well known at the time, according to Janney and previous accounts, notably a 1998 biography of Meyer by journalist Nina Burleigh titled “A Very Private Woman: The Life and Unsolved Murder of Presidential Mistress Mary Meyer.”

A Florida teen has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of two British tourists who had wandered near a government-subsidized housing development, court officials told AFP on Thursday.

Shawn Tyson, now 17 but just 16 at the time of the crimes, was tried as an adult in the case, and will never be eligible for parole, according to the sentence handed down Wednesday by the judge in the west Florida beach town of Sarasota.

“Mr Tyson was found guilty by a jury that deliberated less than two hours,” a court spokeswoman told AFP, adding that the teen was sentenced by judge Rick De Furia to two life sentences without parole.

“Because he is under 18, Mr Tyson is ineligible for the death penalty,” she said.

Tyson was arrested in April 2011 in the fatal shooting British vacationers James Cooper, 25, and James Thomas Kouzaris, 24 who had inadvertently wandered far from the popular resort town’s tourist area and into a high-crime residential area.

Relatives for the two men told local media that they were satisfied with the verdict after Cooper and Kouzaris “were so brutally and needlessly” killed.

“Ours is a life sentence, with no chance of parole from a broken heart,” the families’ statement said.

A 47-year-old man was put to death on Thursday in the US state of Arizona for murdering a philanthropist by injecting him with battery acid and then strangling him, prison authorities said.

Robert Towery, who had spent nearly two decades on death row, was executed by lethal injection at the prison complex in Florence, outside Phoenix, authorities said.

Towery was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1991 killing of the 69-year-old area philanthropist, whom he had met previously, during a robbery that turned to murder.

Towery and an accomplice threatened the victim with a weapon and then tied him up while they robbed the house. Towery then injected the victim with battery acid and strangled him, according to prison documents.

The body of the victim was found the next day and the two suspects arrested. Towery’s accomplice made a plea deal — in exchange for testifying against Towery, the accomplice served a 10-year sentence and has been released.

The execution was the eighth of the year in the United States, and the second in 10 days in Arizona.

The southwestern US state has put 30 inmates to death since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Civil Rights Groups Alarmed But Eric Holder defends the government’s use of “lethal force,” against American citizens

Civil Rights Groups Alarmed But Eric Holder defends the government’s use of “lethal force,” against American citizens….

Official defends ‘lethal force’ against US citizens

US Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday defended the government’s use of “lethal force,” even against American citizens abroad, as part of the effort to protect the nation against terror attacks.

Call Now: 877-681-3921

The speech marked the first time a senior US official has publicly justified in legal terms the drone attacks that are believed to have killed at least three US citizens on foreign soil in recent months, including key Al-Qaeda figure Anwar al-Awlaqi.

“Given the nature of how terrorists act and where they tend to hide, it may not always be feasible to capture a United States citizen terrorist who presents an imminent threat of violent attack,” Holder said in a speech at a law school in Chicago.

“In that case, our government has the clear authority to defend the United States with lethal force.”

Holder said there were circumstances under which “an operation using lethal force in a foreign country, targeted against a US citizen who is a senior operational leader of Al-Qaeda or associated forces, and who is actively engaged in planning to kill Americans, would be lawful.”

Such circumstances included that a thorough review had determined the individual posed “an imminent threat of violent attack against the United States” and that “capture is not feasible.”

Thirdly, the “operation would be conducted in a manner consistent with applicable law of war principles,” Holder told the audience at the Northwestern University School of Law.

“Some have called such operations ‘assassinations.’ They are not… assassinations are unlawful killings,” Holder said.

“Our legal authority is not limited to the battlefield in Afghanistan… We are at war with a stateless enemy, prone to shifting operations from country to country,” he added.

“Our government has both a responsibility and a right to protect this nation and its people from such threats.”

Civil rights groups have cried foul since the killing of Awlaqi in Yemen in September in a US raid.

Some argued it was illegal for the US military to kill an American citizen on the battlefield, following no attempt to indict him.

US intelligence officials believed Awlaqi was linked to a US army major charged with shooting dead 13 people in 2009 in Fort Hood, Texas, and to a Nigerian student accused of trying to blow up a US airliner on December 25, 2009.

President Barack Obama said in September that Awlaqi’s killing was a “major blow” to Al-Qaeda’s Yemeni branch, and marked “another significant milestone in the broader effort to defeat Al-Qaeda and its affiliates.”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) last month filed a lawsuit seeking the release of documents authorizing targeted drone strikes, such as the one on Awlaqi.

US citizen Samir Khan was killed in the same attack on Awlaqi, and Awlaqi’s US-born teenage son was killed in October in a separate suspected US air strike in Yemen.
